A Badge of Friendship Update: Music, Comedy and More!

Posted Mon, 30 Jul 2012

Now we're officially striding through the last half of 2012, we thought it was about time we sent out an update. 2012 has been our busiest year yet working on a variety of wonderful clients from Last.fm to comedian Doug Stanhope and an array of wonderful bands and labels.

If you'd like to read more about our PR and event management services, please check out our ABoF case studies pdf which you can download online. If you'd prefer to get in touch personally, please drop us an email here: info@abadgeoffriendship.com.

Coming up...

We're about to add an array of wonderful new clients and projects to the ABoF roster - we've not announced all of the bands, comedians and new projects we're working on just yet but we're not ones for holding back the good stuff so we thought, why not just announce them here? Don't say we don't spoil you!

We're very excited to be working on comedian Dave Hill's forthcoming book Tasteful Nudes. The multi-talented Mr. Hill has appeared on the US TV show The King of Miami, currently appears as on-air talent for HBO and Cinemax and currently fronts the band Valley Lodge and plays guitar with Walter Schreifels' (Rival Schools, Quicksand) solo band and Diamondsnake, a hard rock band also featuring Moby. Tasteful Nudes will be released in October, we'll have more information on this release and Dave very shortly.

Continuing on from last year's pop-up sessions, we're working with Last.fm on their Originals sessions. These sessions are an intimate an exclusive look at new and established artists featuring interviews and exclusive live performances.

Berlin based duo Me And My Drummer have already released two tracks from their forthcoming debut album The Hawk, The Beak, The Prey and the anticipation is building. Hailed as a cross between Florence + The Machine, Bat For Lashes and Delphic, they've already got John Kennedy and Mary Anne Hobbs (XFM), Huw Stephens (BBC Radio 1) and Tom Ravenscroft and Chris Hawkins (BBC 6Music) signing them praises. The Hawk, The Beak, The Prey is out on September 24th via German label Sinnbus.

Scottish band State Broadcasters release their second album Ghosts We Must Carry via Olive Grove Records on September 24th. They just released a free download of the album track "Trespassers" with another to follow in August just before the album's release.

Another fantastic Olive Grove release coming up is Jo Mango’s album Murmuration. Having already collaborated with Vashti Bunyan and Devendra Banhart, this much anticipated album will showcase Jo’s brilliant songwriting talents as a solo performer.

Also watch out for new artists Cara Mitchell, The Maginot Band, Verse Metrics, Jonny & The Giros, Shirock, Damian Cox, Humphrey Milles, The Jar Family plus more releases from ABoF favourites Atom Eye, Turnpike Glow, The Birthday Suit and The Murder Barn. We'll be posting out information on all of these very soon!

2012 so far...

It's been a year of great releases so far here at ABoF towers. However, not only have we been working with some of the finest new bands around, we also had the chance to work with controversial comedian Doug Stanhope and top music sharing platform Last.fm.

Doug Stanhope released his latest DVD Before Turning The Gun On Himself back in March and completed another successful UK tour, which ended on a high to a packed out audience at the Hammersmith Apollo. The DVD was released to rapturous reviews with Doug appearing in the Shortlist, Rock Sound, MOJO, Nuts and Front on the run up to its release.

After the success of their pop-up sessions with HP last year, Last.fm asked ABoF to event manage their media party with HP earlier this year. The party was to celebrate the activity their activity in 2011 with David Guetta headlining the event.

We've been working with even more brilliant new bands this year, we’re very proud of the quality of our roster this year. We would love to list all the amazing bands we've worked with this year but instead we've put them all on this handy Soundcloud set and you can also read about some of our highlights below!

Knifeworld returned with their strongest release to date - Clairvoyant Fortnight. The EP followed 2011's critically acclaimed EP Dear Lord, No Deal and their 2009 debut album Buried Alone: Tales of Crushing Defeat. Prog Magazine and Rock A Rolla heralded the EP a success and special praise went to their brilliant (and slightly mental!) video for 'Clairvoyant Fortnight', which featured snooker legend Steve Davis.

Scots boys Vigo Thieves have gone from strength to strength providing T in the Park with this year's 2012 theme tune, playing the BBC Introducing stage, packing out shows in Scotland and appearing on Classic Rock, Drowned in Sound, Spinner and NME.com to name but a few.

French Wives have also been flying the flag for talent in Scotland. They released their album Dream of the Inbetween this year with everyone from BBC 6Music, The Line of Best Fit, The Herald, The Fly and The Skinny Magazine singing them praise.

For information, free downloads and video links read on and as always, if you want a digital copy of anything below for review please email info@abadgeoffriendship.com. For all other information about our clients and the work we do, please visit our website.

Knifeworld - Clairvoyant Fortnight

Knifeworld return with their strongest release to date - Clairvoyant Fortnight, out now on Believers Roast. The EP follows 2011’s critically acclaimed EP Dear Lord, No Deal and their 2009 debut album Buried Alone: Tales of Crushing Defeat. With their trademark uncompromising psychedelia in full effect, Knifeworld still sound like no-one else. Intense and kaleidoscopic, this release offers another piece of the curious jigsaw.

The radio edit of the title track "Clairvoyant Fortnight" is available to download now from our Soundcloud page. You can also watch the fantastic video featuring snooker legend Steve Davis via Knifeworld's YouTube page now.

Turnpike Glow - Inflatable Optimism

Turnpike Glow will release their debut EP Inflatable Optimism today on Fünke Pop Records. The 4-track EP, mixed by Broken Social Scene and Los Campesinos producer Dave Newfeld, perfectly encapsulates their infectious indie pop sensibilities; the EP is the perfect little slice of Turnpike Glow’s agenda - honest, unabashed indie exuberance. The band have previously received airplay from Absolute Radio’s Frank Skinner and heavy support from Amazing Radio. Spinner featured previous single 1986 as their Video of the Day whilst Classic Rock awarded their latest single release The Turn, The Pike and The Glow their Track of the Day, BBC 6Music's Tom Robinson hailed their music as "perky upbeat synthy indiepop" and websites like The 405 have hailed the band as “ludicrously catchy”.

The EP is available to stream exclusively on This Is Fake DIY and you can grab a copy for yourself from Turnpike Glow's Bandcamp page.

Night Noise Team - Pieces

Night Noise Team are release the EP Pieces today via Permwhale Recordings. Pieces displays the band’s multitude of influences – ranging from Serge Gainsbourg to The Smiths to Phoenix - with repetitive catchy, electronic beats that wouldn’t be out of place on a Daft Punk record. Meanwhile, their melodic, harmonised pop-laden vocals are backed up by funky synths, which would make even the likes of Earth, Wind and Fire proud! There is a sense of freshness, guile and clever detail in the bands songwriting that develops subtly throughout the EP, meaning the listener is exposed to something new every time they press the play button.

Night Noise Team's EP is available to buy from their Bandcamp page, you can also check out the video for "Pieces" on YouTube.

The Murder Barn - Harvest / America

The Murder Barn are a London based six piece, ready to unleash their own earthy brand of alternative rock this summer with their debut double A-side single Harvest / America, out now. With this offering, the band showcase both their brilliant songwriting talent and their ability to weave a wonderful story around the melodies as well. “America” channels influences such as The Bad Seeds and David Lynch, and wouldn’t be amiss on the soundtrack for 70s folk horror cult classics like The Wicker Man. “Harvest” takes a slightly different direction, with the music and vocals taking on a heavier mantle much more akin to PJ Harvey and Anna Calvi.

The Murder Barn's double a-side single is available to buy via their Bandcamp page now as a limited edition 7-inch vinyl or digital download. You can also watch the videos for "America" and "Harvest" on their YouTube page.

Turnpike Glow debut EP news and video!

Posted Thu, 10 May 2012

For fans of: Pheonix, Broken Social Scene, Super Furry Animals

Turnpike Glow will release their debut EP Inflatable Optimism on 11th June 2012. The 4-track EP, mixed by Broken Social Scene and Los Campesinos producer Dave Newfeld, perfectly encapsulates their infectious indie pop sensibilities.

The EP is the perfect little slice of Turnpike Glow’s agenda - honest, unabashed indie exuberance. Opener “No More Dancing” shows that the band aren’t just about the sing along chorus - they have substance too. “Marie” showcases quirky guitars and summery songwriting not unlike Vampire Weekend. Previously released single 1986 continues the theme with the band writing one of the most infectious chorus’ you’ll hear in a while. The song is about “the heaviest snow to fall in Rome since 1986”, which also serves as the main lyrics for the chorus. Latest single and last track of the EP, The Turn, The Pike and The Glow, was inspired by the documentary ‘Inside Job’. Guitarist / vocalist Sandro notes “the track is an ironic take on off-shore banking and moral bankruptcy.” Despite the seemingly heavy subject matter, the band make light of it all with their signature upbeat indie tempos and catchy lyrics.

The video for the single The Turn, The Pike And The Glow is available to watch now on the band's YouTube channel.

The title of the EP - Inflatable Optimism - not only mirrors the bands music but their outlook as well. “It took us a while to find our way as a band and to settle down in London. There were times for us when optimism had to be 'inflated' artificially. And more generally these aren't exactly rosy times we're living in so it's also a reflection of that in a way,” notes Sandro. Turnpike Glow aren’t all rosy cheeked indie enthusiasm, their cheerful songs front four, deep thinking individuals.

The EP is available to pre-order via Turnpike Glow's Bandcamp page for a very reasonable £3. There are also 500 numbered, limited edition copies available.

The band started life in Rome, in a scene marginalized by glossy Italian mainstream pop and insider trading. However, with their Pavement and Phoenix inspired sound, they soon found themselves supporting acts like The Futureheads and Cooper Temple Clause. In 2007 they started flying over to do live shows in London, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. It wasn't long before Sandro Schiena (vocals/guitar/keys) and Giuseppe La Mela (vocals/bass/keys), the songwriting core of the band, moved to London armed with only their guitars and a bag full of European plug adaptors. One rainy Sunday, the pair bumped into (drums) busking on the tube in a giant sombrero. They talked, they laughed and eventually, they joined forces to become the Anglo-Italian indie pop powerhouse Turnpike Glow! Their line-up was recently complete with the addition of Tom P. Griffiths (guitar/BV’s).

The band have previously received airplay from Absolute Radio’s Frank Skinner and heavy support from Amazing Radio. Spinner featured 1986 as their Video of the Day whilst Classic Rock awarded The Turn, The Pike and The Glow their Track of the Day and websites like The 405 have hailed the band as “ludicrously catchy”.

Inflatable Optimism will be released via Fünke Pop Records on 11th June 2012.

Introducing… Turnpike Glow!

Posted Wed, 23 Nov 2011

Turnpike Glow started life in Italy but are now UK based, bringing their sunny, quirky Phoenix influenced sound to Britain’s rainy shores. The band's first offering, The Turn, The Pike And The Glow, is being released to press and music fans alike as a free MP3 download, which will serve as a little taster of things to come in 2012!

The track’s strong euphoric chorus is contrasted by minimalist verses that allow the band's strong vocal harmonies to shine through (catchy vocal harmonies being one of the band’s signature sounds). This is accomplished songwriting performed by a band that knows exactly what they're trying to achieve.

The Turn, The Pike And The Glow is available to download now from the A Badge of Friendship Soundcloud page.

Sandro Schiena (vocals / guitar / keys) and Giuseppe La Mela (vocals / bass / keys) started the band in Rome, in a scene marginalised by glossy Italian mainstream pop and insider trading. However, with their Pavement / Phoenix inspired sound, they soon found themselves supporting acts like Cooper Temple Clause, The Futureheads and The Constantines. In 2007 they started flying over to do live shows in London, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. It soon became clear that the UK was the place to be if they wanted to find a receptive audience. It wasn't long before Sandro and Giuseppe, the songwriting core of the band, moved to London armed with only their guitars and a bag full of European plug adaptors! One rainy Sunday, they bumped into Anthony J. Hutchinson (drums) and Jeremy Levy (guitar) busking on the tube in giant sombreros.
