All The Unkindness of Ravens News
Hello February!

After a very hard working January, scurrying behind the scenes and setting up lots of lovely new bands, we’re happy to say hello to February. We had a fantastic 2011 with ABoF being featured in several magazines (NME and Live UK), plus our bands did terrifically well, hitting all major magazines and websites last year.
So here’s a little rundown of what’s been going down here at ABoF towers since the start of the year and what’s coming up in the next month or two! If you make it to the end, there are lots of free tracks to download and stream in this newsletter, if you've any questions about anything you read here, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and remember to keep checking our official website for all the latest news!
HP and Last.fm presents David Guetta
A few weeks ago, the culmination of many months of hard work and planning with Last.fm finally happened - David Guetta and 2ManyDJs DJ-ed exclusively for HP and Last.fm at The Rose Club - an event for HP and Last.fm’s media partners.
The club was packed, there were lots of happy faces and the music was terrific. This was the largest event we’ve had to organise and manage since we started and we’ve promted our fair share of events in the past (sold out shows with Hell Is For Heroes and Jeffrey Lewis to name but a few).
Super photographer Lee Allen was on the scene to capture the good vibes on the night, as you can see, we all had a great time!

New Year, New Bands, New Music!
As you can see from our website, Facebook and Twitter activity, we’ve been announcing new bands and releases left right and centre. As always, you can stream and download free tracks from the artist pages on our website or our official Soundcloud page.
Access Royale, an alternative indie band from Washington DC, are brand new to our roster and with a sound akin to The Dismemberment Plan. We are very excited to see what happens with these guys in the next few months as they prepare to release their debut album City of Paradigm on 17th May. The track "Hide" is available to download now from our Soundcloud page.
If you prefer your music a little more on the filmic, post-rock edge of alternative then Atom Eye will be right up your street. This is Elsie Martins’ side project whilst she steps aside from Phantom for the moment to create gorgeous, experimental, cinematic soundscapes. The single Trilogy Part I is available to download from Atom Eye's official website from 6th February 2012.
Our very own electro rockers, The Unkindness of Ravens, return with the single Last Call For The River (out 5th March). The single is taken from their eagerly awaited debut album Virus out 7th May on Sonic Fire Records. Last Call For The River is available to stream no via the band's Soundcloud page.
Turnpike Glow released their first free download before Christmas and now start the year with their heads held high with the planned release of the single 1986, a track that’s been remixed by Broken Social Scene’s producer, Dave Newfeld. The track is available to stream now but will be available to download free from 5th March.
Finally, Saturday Night Gym Club, a band that site M83 and Ólafur Arnalds as a few of their influences, prepare to release their EP How To Build A Life Raft on 5th March. You can download the title track of the EP now and also watch the video for “I Know featuring Ellie Walker” on their YouTube channel.
Scotland Rocks!
When it comes to new music, Scotland prove more than ever before that they're pushing boundaries and stretching imaginations. We’ve got lots of new Scottish bands on our roster and each are as different and exciting as the next.
In case you missed them, The Birthday Suit (Rod Jones from Idlewild) released their debut album Sing It Alone in November. Now they’re ready to hit the road, about to embark upon a UK tour from February 10th, full dates are on our website.
French Wives are set to release their debut album Dream of the Inbetween, out 7th May. Having only just announced our involvement with the band last week, the free track from their album - "Younger" - has already had around a thousand listens and is getting folk buzzing with excitement online. If you're a fan of indie greats like Belle & Sebastian and Teenage Fanclub, these guys are for you.
Tango in the Attic return. The Glenthrothes four-piece are set to release their much anticipated second album on April 12th (so fresh from the studio, it’s yet to be named!). The album is the follow-up to their fantastic 2010 debut Bank Place Locomotive Society. The live session video for the track “Swimming Pool” is available to watch on their YouTube channel.
Vigo Thieves also make a comeback after a short break, writing and recording new songs. They’re about to release their EP Heart and Soul Part 1 on 5th March, the first EP of a two-part release. Their new sound harks back to those epic 80s greats like Simple Minds and U2, real sing a long stuff. "Heartbeats" is available to download from our Soundcloud page now.
Join us at Geek Out
After a short break, we’re back DJ-ing at Geek Out!
The night is run by Mark Beaumont (NME, Guardian) and Dan Martin (NME, Guardian) and we’ve been DJ-ing there for the last year. It runs the first Thursday of every month, the next Geek Out will feature Turnpike Glow’s single launch for 1986.

The Unkindness of Ravens to release “Last Call For The River”
600by250.jpg)
"Genuine contenders for being one of the best underground electro bands out there at the moment..." - Artrocker Magazine
The Unkindness of Ravens are the hardest working underground electro-rock duo on the scene. After two prolific years of releases, videos and live shows Nina Wagner (vox) and Ben Raine (bass & vox) are ready to release their next single Last Call For The River, taken from their forthcoming debut album Virus.
The band have previously been compared to The Kills, which is not bad at all, but the pair have taken their sound further than the usual indie electro clash vibe of their peers, transcending all genres - electro, rock and indie.
Last Call For The River, features their signature sound of hypnotic, pumping beats supported by Ben’s cacophonous bass lines and Nina’s sexy, sultry vocals. As Nina seductively calls “I was made this way”, it feels as though they’ve trapped you in their melodic web, with no escape, and after this intense 3-minutes is over, you’ll be left wanting to hear more..
Last Call For The River is available to listen now on The Unkindness of Ravens Soundcloud page. It will be available to download free from March 5th 2012.
These last few years have seen Nina and Ben release a slew of singles - Dead Air and White Road culminated with the band’s first EP relase in 2010, I Used To Be So Pretty. Excellent reviews and coverage followed from magazines like Rock Sound to Artrocker and an array of features online on Clash, NYLON and The 405.
In 2011, the pair focussed on playing shows around Europe, particularly Berlin, where they now sometimes base themselves to write and record. Just before the end of last year, they released the double a-side single Virus | Viper, the video for which appeared on NME.com amongst an array of other online hubs. In fact, the band have become known for their unique style when it comes to their videos with the visuals for Virus being hailed by the band as “a cross between Blade Runner and Black Swan”.
The video for Virus is still available to watch on The Unkindness of Ravens Soundcloud page. Please be warned, this video contains strobe effects.
The Unkindness of Ravens are one of the UK’s most exciting underground prospects. Last Call For The River will be released on March 5th 2012 on Sonic Fire Records, with their debut album set to drop in May 2012. The the future looks exciting indeed for The Unkindness of Ravens.

Be sure to check out the full interview.
Panic Dots were also on hand to review Geek Out at The Wheelbarrow, where Turnpike Glow played live alongside The Unkindness Of Ravens for a night of fantastic music. Be sure to check out the full review.

Last.fm's DELS Pop-Up Session

Following an exciting summer of music,HP and Last.fm have once again joined forces to present three more pop-up sessions as part of HP's Everybody On global campaign, celebrating how people around the world are using HP technology to pursue their personal and professional passions.
The first of these sessions will be a free live performance from DELS (aka Kieran Dickins) on the 7th November at The Lock Tavern - there are no tickets required, so just turn up at 8pm. DELS is a new type of rapper (which is another way of saying that he’s more than just a rapper), applying the kind of attention to detail, micro-management and macro-vision which Jay-Z used to build a business empire. DELS makes art.
The Leisure Society are also lined-up for the the pop-up session treatment on 24th November at Tamesis Dock. For all the latest information keep up to date on HP's "Artists Lounge".

ABoF News - NME, Q Awards and more...
Congratulations for making it this far and thanks for reading - so what else have we been up to?
Paul and Claire were featured in the November 5th issue of NME, talking about the financial aspects of running an independent company and how they cope on a day-to-day basis. Make sure you pick up a copy this week!

Team ABoF donned their glad rags and headed down to the Q Awards aftershow party to play the first DJ set of the night, and also as an excuse to people watch in the VIP area. It also coincided with assistant Ed's first anniversary with the company - so what better excuse for a party?
Paul drew a line in the sand with the scenes that form around music, bemoaning the rigid rules that need to be adhered to to be considered "true" to them.
The hairier members of Team ABoF (that's Paul and Ed by the way!) took out their razors on November 1st, to rid themselves of their beards in support of Movember.
It's going to be a few days before their 'mos really kick in, so in the meantime it would be great if you could spare some pennies for the cause: Donate to Paul or Ed - every little bit counts!

The Unkindness of Ravens are back!

The Unkindness of Ravens are underground electro duo Nina Wagner (vox) and Ben Raine (bass & vox) and they return with a brand new double A-side single Virus | Viper, due for release on 3rd October 2011 via Sonic Fire Records. The pair have already been compared to acclaimed bands such like The White Stripes and The Kills, however, their sound is darker and heavier, more soulful and progressive. The Unkindness of Ravens are a band to be judged entirely on their own considerable merits.
Virus | Viper comes after Nina and Ben spent the first few months of 2011 writing, recording and touring in Germany. They returned to the UK, honed their sound and the product is this razor sharp double A-side offering. “Virus” is tribal. The pounding beats punctuated only by Ben’s minimalist guitar and Nina’s staccato-like delivery of the lyrics “you have to be the cure”, over and over again. “Viper” demonstrates a different dimension to Nina and Ben’s angular, futuristic sound with heavier guitars and intertwining melodic vocals.
Last year, after series of single releases including Dead Air and White Road, the band released the EP I Used To Be So Pretty. Excellent reviews and coverage followed from magazines like Rock Sound to Artrocker and an array of features online on Clash, NYLON and The 405. This proved that The Unkindness of Ravens’ sound transcends all genres – electro, rock and indie.
You can watch the video for "Virus" is on The Unkindness of Ravens' YouTube channel and is their take on Blade Runner meets Black Swan (warning: contains strobe effects).
"Virus" was also used as the backing track for French Connection's AW11 preview video.
The Unkindness of Ravens are one of the UK’s most exciting underground prospects. They’re live show is brimming with heat and passion, whilst the music is akin to the aforementioned The Kills on acid! With their debut album on the horizon, set to drop in 2012, the future looks exciting for The Unkindness of Ravens.
The Unkindness Of Ravens write to Artrocker Magazine (Online)

Our ABoF news round-up will happen every Friday afternoon including a mixture of what's been going on with our artists, what's gone up on our blog and any ABoF related stirrings.Label Love

This week, the UK was gripped by riots up and down the country. Thousands of people have been affected, and several small businesses may have to shut up shop for good - and all because of some opportunistic looters smashing up anything in their path.
The PIAS distribution centre in Enfield was burnt down during these riots and many of Britain's indie labels lost valuable stock.
Two people that are particularly close to ABoF's heart are Dan Salter (Echoes And Dust) and Hannah Morgan (Rumour Cubes), who, early in the hours of Tuesday morning, started a Twitter campaign that quickly went viral. They're the people behind the LabelLove - a PIAS Benefit.
We interviewed them on our blog this week to find out more about the campaign.

Ex Libras - Underachiever

Underachiever was the second single released from Ex Libras terrific debut album Suite(s). The video was shot and directed by Ex Libras' front man Amit Sharma, at an amateur boxing match featuring his younger brother.
The lights in the background flicker with the steady, fluttering beats whilst the slowed down action of the match itself matches the song's epic intensity.
If you'd like to see more videos by Ex Libras, their YouTube channel is the place to visit. You can watch all their music videos, video diaries, live performances and the fantastic documentary "To Build A Studio".

The track "Snowman" is the b-side of Esperi's (aka Chris Lee-Marr) gorgeous Christmas single Made For Life. The single was released this week (December 6th) via Olive Grove Records and the limited edition physical copies already selling out fast.
The video for "Snowman" is a lovely reflection of the song's intimate beauty and a perfect backdrop to one of winter's most wonderful pleasures - building a snowman in your very own back garden.

Union Sound Set - Cause And Resolve

A change of name, a debut album - Start/Stop - and two singles in the bag, yes, Union Sound Set did exceptionally well during the last half of 2010. BBC Radio 1's Fearne Cotton and the 519 Show picked-up on the band, the rock press were singing them praises and the online community rose to show their support as the band also embarked upon a short UK tour to support the album release.

What Would Jesus Drive - Your Awful Kids

What Would Jesus Drive are bringing back good old-fashioned pop punk back to music. Their first video for The Girls Are In Charge was a tongue-in-cheek, quirky animated piece, but it's with Your Awful Kids, where we get a sense of where the band may take us in 2011.
What Would Jesus Drive's band's YouTube channel is the best place to grab all their latest video content.

Our very own Electro-Rocking rockers, The Unkindness of Ravens, have received a glowing live review from Altercarnated Photography from their recent performance at The Purple Turtle:
The Unkindness of Ravens – A two piece Alternative/Rock band compromising of just a vocalist and a bass player with a backing track. The vocalist was very theatrical on stage with her movement and had some great harmonies with the bass player on backing vocals.
They made their way through their set, which seemed tight and well rehearsed.A great band & well worth the travel, id recommend seeing them live! 7.5/10

May Releases
The Unkindness of Ravens

The Unkindness of Ravens are Nina Wagner (vox) and Ben Raine (bass & vox). The pair entwine garage rock riffs with raw dance beats to create dark, electronically inspired guitar tunes. Nina and Ben make music with an incredibly punk / DIY ethos, creating everything themselves from their label - Sonic Fire Records - to the music itself.
In no time at all, the pair have gained a good reputation for themselves being compared to bands such as The Kills, The YYYs and The White Stripes. Artrocker Magazine likened them to "a bonfire blowing in the wind" whilst Tom Robinson of BBC 6 Music picked-up their "huge" sound.
Listen to a stream of forthcoming single Dead Air HERE.
Fresh Legs

BBC Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank's favourites and Bestival sensations Fresh Legs follow-up on an amazing summer of action-packed gigging, writing and recording with their debut release for Sotones Records.

Underachiever is the second single to be released from Ex Libras' incredible, critically acclaimed debut album Suite(s). The single is out May 10th 2010 on the band's own Wirebird label and it follows a natural progression from their debut single Radar. Underachiever is the sound of a band mature beyond their years, certainly destined for a bigger audience.

Creating intricate layers of sound with an array of melodic instruments - including banjo, mandolin, accordion, piano, violin, electric guitar and percussion -, Haunted Stereo are very much about the thrills and fun that is to be had from writing and playing music together.
Now, with a body of great records behind them, Haunted Stereo are ready to release double A-side On A Pin / Lock the Doors.
