The Son(s) releases “Leviathan” EP plus new video!

Posted Wed, 09 May 2012

For fans of... Field Music, Grizzly Bear

After their critically acclaimed self-titled album released in 2011, The Son(s) return with their latest EP Leviathan, out now on Olive Grove Records.

To celebrate the release of the EP, the band have uploaded the fantastic video for the EP track "If I Hear You Talk Apostrophes Again..." to their YouTube page.

The track was also released as a free download, which you can grab from the A Badge of Friendship Soundcloud page.

Leviathan was recorded in the middle of winter in an old, cold, empty flat in Edinburgh and, as a result, each track is dripping with atmosphere. The EP picks up where last year's self-titled debut album left off, tipping a hat to the laid back, stripped down qualities of Americana, with tracks like "Cocksure Boys" and "Shot Out A Cannon" utilising echoey minimalist guitar and harmonious vocals to summon images and sounds reminiscent of The Beta Band at their best.
As always, strong lyrics are at the forefront of this release, with each track encapsulated in its own world while The Son(s) paint metaphysical pictures in the mind's eye of the listener.

The Son(s) previous releases received great support from the press, with the single Radar featuring as Track Of The Day on Spinner and Classic Rock Magazine (online) plus some outstanding reviews from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Sunday Mail (4/5) and The Skinny (4/5).They also received support from BBC 6Music’s Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson plus BBC Radio 1 Scotland’s Vic Galloway and Ally Mcrae. Leviathan is a worthy follow-up to an already impressive body of work.

Leviathan is available to buy now via the band's Bandcamp page.

Leviathan EP is available on Olive Grove Records as a download and limited edition cassette tape, complete with intriguing inlay artwork.

Physical copies of the EP are available but extremely limited, however, we have digital promos and streams of the EP available upon request.

After their critically acclaimed self-titled album released in 2011, The Son(s) return with their latest EP Leviathan, which will be released on 7th May 2012 via Olive Grove Records

“These songs were sung and recorded in an old cold, empty, echoey flat in Edinburgh. Away from home, stuck in the dark middle of winter. It was the coldest winter there for more than 50 years. Temperatures fell to minus 14C. It was colder at night, colder still at home. Snow fell, trains stopped.”

The Son(s) release their debut album today!

Posted Mon, 07 Mar 2011

The Son(s) release their self-titled debut album today Olive Grove Records.

The first single from the album was Radar, released back in January. The track combined silky textured vocals and a guitar sound infused with Americana to create a sound that combines elements of Iron & Wine and Grizzly Bear with a liberal helping of The Beach Boys. But this was just the tip of the iceberg. The track "Dogs, Boys & Men", which will feature as Spinner's Track of the Day in a few weeks time, is a great example of The Son(s) diversity showing their influences aren't their anchor.

The band has already received brilliant support from their native Scotland with various DJs on BBC Radio 1 Scotland (Ally McCrae and Vic Galloway) giving them a spin. Magazines like The Skinny and The List have also said some lovely words with The List comparing the band to Midlake but mentioning that the album has an "accomplished sound of its own", whilst The Skinny gave the album a commendable 4/5 review.

Tracklisting:

1. Dogs, Boys & Men
2. Sonny, You'll Never Get That Ride
3. You Belong To No One
4. Radar
5. Sold Down The River
6. There Is A Hole In The Middle Of The Sea...
7. Count Your Feet
8. George & Harm
9. Soheyo
10. Pinholes
11. Mars Just Plied Her With Gin...

The Son(s) debut album is Rough Trade's recommended album of the week. You can buy it on CD via the Rough Trade website for £7.99.

There are only digital copies of album left to review, let us know if you'd like a download link. Please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for more information.

Introducing… The Son(s)

Posted Thu, 06 Jan 2011

The Son(s) are a band shrouded in mystery. Preferring to maintain their anonymity, this is as much as we can tell you about their origins:

The Son(s) were three men in a band, in Edinburgh.
One Son went to London, and made his fortune in the movies.
Another Son went to Oxford and lives in a small commune there.
The last Son eventually went back to the North East of Scotland and wrote and recorded these songs.

Radar is the product of the last remaining son. The single combines the silky textured vocals and a guitar sound infused with Americana to create a sound that combines elements of Iron & Wine and Grizzly Bear with a liberal helping of The Beach Boys. The song has a hauntingly filmic quality, conjuring-up images of abandoned funfairs and lost highways at midnight. It's an incredibly atmospheric release from an artist confident in his sound.

The single's b-side, "I Have Been", in contrast to the title track, is very much vocally driven. The Son(s) allow instruments to take a back seat while the vocals create a downbeat harmony that sounds like it's been wrenched from deep within the soul. There are elements of early Elvis Costello in last sons' vocal style, with his ability to produce wonderfully poignant lyrics with knives hidden inside them. This is a musician who knows how to use his talents to elicit an emotional response in the listener, and he isn't afraid to do so.

The Son(s) are currently putting the finishing touches to their debut album, due for release in March, and will be spending the early part of 2011 laying the groundwork for its’ reception.

Tracklisting:

1. Dogs, Boys & Men
2. Sonny, You'll Never Get That Ride
3. You Belong To No One
4. Radar
5. Sold Down The River
6. There Is A Hole In The Middle Of The Sea...
7. Count Your Feet
8. George & Harm
9. Soheyo
10. Pinholes
11. Mars Just Plied Her With Gin...

The Son(s) single Radar is available for download only, released via EliandOz on 17th January 2011.
