Posted Fri, 11 Nov 2011
It's Friday, so that can only mean two things - the weekend is making its final preparations for launch, and it's time for another ABoF Friday News Round-Up!

This week saw two fantastic releases, as well as a mind-blowing pop-up session from DELS at The Lock Tavern, as part of HP and Last.fm's Everybody On global campaign.

Following it's release on Monday, our news feed has been awash with press about The Moth & The Mirror's debut album, Honestly, This World. Drowned In Sound gave the album 8/10 in their review, calling the album "a phenomonally fluent debut".

Artrocker Magazine (online) commemorated the release by giving away the album track "Fire" on their site for their readers to download, while Music-News.com organised a competition offering three of their readers a chance to win a copy of the album, absolutely free!

You can listen to "Fire", a track taken from the album, over on the ABoF SoundCloud page.

It's finally Friday, which means two things - the weekend is so close you can practically taste it, and it's time for another ABoF Friday News round up!

Press for The Birthday Suit's debut album once again featured prominently in our news feed this week, with an article penned by Idlewild guitarist and songwriter appearing in The Skinny, explaining why one of his heroes is the immortal Thurston Moore.

Rod also took the time to chat to the folks over at GaydarNation, giving one of the funniest interviews we've read all month, and the band's debut album, The Eleventh Hour, picked up a great review on This Is Fake DIY, and had one of its tracks featured on the Best In British Music Show With Tara O., as well as Bethan's Rock n Roll Book Club on Amazing Radio and Magnet Magazine (online).

Although The Eleventh Hour is due for release on 11th of November 2011 (that's 11.11.11) via Sing It Alone Records, the band have made the album available to download from their official website today at a special early bird price for fans - £5!

The Moth & The Mirror picked up a fantastic review from our friends at Geeks.co.uk, hailing Honestly, This World as "...a great record for the inevitable dark, moody evenings".

The Scottish super-group also saw one of their tracks given a spin by Ally McCrae on his BBC Introducing. . . in Scotland show on Radio 1, as well as having the Headron remix of album track "Germany" featured on FAMEmagazine

Honestly, This World will be released on November 7th via Olive Grove Records as a download and limited edition CD.

Make sure you grab a copy of the November 5th issue of the NME (out now).

    ABoF News: Hello November!

    Posted Thu, 03 Nov 2011
After an unseasonably warm October, it was only a matter of time until winter reared its frosty head, so we thought we'd warm you up with news of what's going down this month at ABoF HQ.

The month has only just kicked off, so we thought we'd send a little update about what's coming up. We've got some great releases out in the next few weeks and ABoF have been featured in the November 5th issue of NME - not bad for the first week of the month! If you've any questions about what you read below, please get in touch: info@abadgeoffriendship.

Free MP3s can always be downloaded from our Soundcloud page and any other information you need about the artists, labels and other companies we work with can be found on our official website. Thanks for reading - we hope you have a great month ahead!

    Last.fm's DELS Pop-Up Session

Following an exciting summer of music,HP and Last.fm have once again joined forces to present three more pop-up sessions as part of HP's Everybody On global campaign, celebrating how people around the world are using HP technology to pursue their personal and professional passions.

The first of these sessions will be a free live performance from DELS (aka Kieran Dickins) on the 7th November at The Lock Tavern - there are no tickets required, so just turn up at 8pm. DELS is a new type of rapper (which is another way of saying that he’s more than just a rapper), applying the kind of attention to detail, micro-management and macro-vision which Jay-Z used to build a business empire. DELS makes art.

The Leisure Society are also lined-up for the the pop-up session treatment on 24th November at Tamesis Dock. For all the latest information keep up to date on HP's "Artists Lounge".

    November Releases

We've lots two great releases out this month, both from Scottish artist's who've already left a huge mark on the indie/alternative scene.

The Moth & The Mirror have been proclaimed as a Scottish supergroup, comprising of members taken from an array of Scottish talent including: Stacey Sievwright from The Reindeer Section and Arab Strap (vocals/guitar), Gordon Skene from Frightened Rabbit
(guitar/vocals), Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow and Song of Return (guitar/vocals) Kevin McCarvel (bass), Iain Sandilands (percussion) and Peter Murch (drums).

Idlewild guitarist / songwriter Rod Jones, is back with a remarkable new solo project, The Birthday Suit. Their debut album, The Eleventh Hour, is a return to the noisy pop moments that originally established him as a legend in the UK music scene.

Although The Eleventh Hour is due for release on 11th of November 2011 (that's 11.11.11) via Sing It Alone Records, the band have made the album available to download from their official website today at a special early bird price for fans - £5! This special price is only available until the album's official release date, so get in there quick!

You can also listen to album track, "Do You Ever?", over on the ABoF SoundCloud page.

ABoF News - NME, Q Awards and more...

Congratulations for making it this far and thanks for reading - so what else have we been up to?

Paul and Claire were featured in the November 5th issue of NME, talking about the financial aspects of running an independent company and how they cope on a day-to-day basis. Make sure you pick up a copy this week!

Team ABoF donned their glad rags and headed down to the Q Awards aftershow party to play the first DJ set of the night, and also as an excuse to people watch in the VIP area. It also coincided with assistant Ed's first anniversary with the company - so what better excuse for a party?

Paul drew a line in the sand with the scenes that form around music, bemoaning the rigid rules that need to be adhered to to be considered "true" to them.

The hairier members of Team ABoF (that's Paul and Ed by the way!) took out their razors on November 1st, to rid themselves of their beards in support of Movember.

It's going to be a few days before their 'mos really kick in, so in the meantime it would be great if you could spare some pennies for the cause: Donate to
Paul or Ed - every little bit counts!

    October round-up (stuff we forgot!)...

We have been so busy over the last two months, we completely forgot to send out an October newsletter! Here's what went down last month...

The Lowriders started the month releasing single Who's Gonna Save Your Soul and wrapped it up with their much anticipated debut album, Fury, with one of its tracks, "Big Moustache", earning the much coveted "Track of The Day" on Classic Rock Magazine (online).

Fury was released via Adrenalin Records on October 31st.
You can buy it for £7.99 from iTunes and £6.99 from Amazon.

Mausi's single, Sol was released on October 10th via Racecar Music, enhancing their reputation to produce fun, danceable tunes, building on the pop foundations with subtle disco influences from the likes of Damn Arms and Pony Pony Run Run. They must have done something right, as NME.com featured the fantastic video for their single on their site, and it seems you can't walk into a Topshop in the UK without hearing the track!

Sol was officially released this week via Racecar Music. You can download it via the band's official website.

The Unkindness Of Ravens made a triumphant return to the UK with their new single, the double A-side Virus | Viper.

The single(s) were accompanied by two amazing videos, both of which were featured on Artrocker Magazine (online) (who also gave them a fantastic 4 star review) and NME.com.

Virus | Viper is released via Sonic Fire Records. The single is available to buy on iTunes, but you can buy it cheaper via the band's Bandcamp page.

The Lowriders release debut album - Fury!

    Posted Mon, 31 Oct 2011

After releasing their amazing single, Who's Gonna Save Your Soul in early October, The Lowriders have returned, finishing off the month with the release of their raw and energetic debut album, Fury

The Lowriders are Colchester based four-piece Dave Garlick (vox), Brian Ware (guitar), Adam Parrot (drums) and Jay Chamberlain (bass). Their album opens with a flood of distorted guitar and driving percussion, and it rarely lets up. Fury lacks pretension and represents the work of a band who have discovered a sound in which they feel comfortable, and infused it with critically biting lyrics, charting the highs and lows of trying to survive within an increasingly dog-eat-dog music industry.

The band's journey started in 2008, when they collectively decided to turn a new page, leaving their record label behind, renaming the four-piece, creating their own label (Adrenalin Records) and finally releasing their first single under their newfound identity - 2010's Big Moustache.
You can stream and download it via the ABoF SoundCloud page.

The Lowriders - Big Moustache by abadgeoffriendship

With a history of guerrilla gig campaigns, and a flair for the theatrical, 2011 is sure to mark the completion of the band's renaissance.

Fury was released via Adrenalin Records today. You can buy it for £7.99 from iTunes and £6.99 from Amazon.

    ABoF Friday News Round-Up!

    Posted Fri, 07 Oct 2011
Another busy week for us here as we finally say goodbye to the October heatwave, and round up what's been going down in the office at ABoF HQ!

    Released this week..

The Lowriders released their outstanding single, Who's Gonna Save Your Soul, on Monday, giving people a taste of their upcoming album, Fury. They've created a sound that harks back to the days when bands would captivate an audience in a smoky bar with their simple, yet effective, rock and roll grooves.

You can listen to "Big Moustache", a track taken from their upcoming album, on the ABoF SoundCloud page.

The Lowriders - Big Moustache by abadgeoffriendship

Check out their impressive live show at one of the dates listed below:

  • 21st October - Fusion - Chelmsford
  • 25th October - The Good Ship - London
  • 4th November - The Bull - Colchester
  • 12th November - The Kings Arms - St Osyth
  • 18th November - Fusion - Chelmsford

  • Who's Gonna Save Your Soul was released via Adrenalin Records. You can buy it for £1.29 from iTunes.

Monday also saw The Unkindness Of Ravens release their hypnotic double a-side Virus | Viper, along with the visually stunning videos for both.

The video for Virus was featured on NME.com, so if you haven't had a chance to watch it yet, be sure to check it out.

They've returned to the UK, honed their sound and the product is this razor sharp double A-side offering. “Virus” is tribal. The pounding beats punctuated only by Ben’s minimalist guitar and Nina’s staccato-like delivery of the lyrics “you have to be the cure”, over and over again. “Viper” demonstrates a different dimension to Nina and Ben’s angular, futuristic sound with heavier guitars and intertwining melodic vocals.

Check out the video for "Viper" on The Unkindness Of Ravens's YouTube page.

The single is currently available to buy on iTunes but you can buy it cheaper via the band's Bandcamp page.

    Coming up...

We spent the rest of the week preparing for the release of Mausi's latest single Sol, out Monday 10th October via Racecar Music. Their certainly has been a lot of interest building up around the Newcastle based band, especially after the video for their single was on NME.com.

    In other news...

Team ABoF also found themselves DJing to a bustling crowd at The Wheelbarrow on Thursday at for the ace live music night, Geek Out. If you didn't manage to catch the night, keep an eye on the night's official Facebook page for news of their next event, which runs on the first Thursday of every month. The night is completely free so there's no excuses not to catch the next one on November 3rd!

The Lowriders release “Who’s Gonna Save Your Soul”.

    Posted Mon, 03 Oct 2011

The Lowriders latest single, Who's Gonna Save Your Soul has been released today via Adrenalin Records!

Who's Gonna Save Your Soul is taken from their debut album, Fury and is inspired by society's fixation with the phenomenon of celebrity and the reasons behind it. With an aggressive guitar attack, and an understated vocal that builds into a primal scream as the track progresses, The Lowriders have created a song that harks back to the days when bands would captivate an audience in a smoky bar with their simple, yet effective, rock and roll grooves.

You can listen to "Big Moustache", a track taken from their upcoming album, over on the ABoF SoundCloud page.

    Introducing… The Lowriders

    Posted Mon, 12 Sep 2011

The Lowriders are Colchester based four-piece Dave Garlick (vox), Brian Ware (guitar), Adam Parrot (drums) and Jay Chamberlain (bass). Formerly known as Freud, their experience of creating an album from scratch and attempting to release it while maintaining as much creative control as possible feeds into their latest album, Fury.

In 2008 the band decided to turn a new page, leaving their record label behind, renaming the four-piece, creating their own label (Adrenalin Records) and finally releasing their first single under their newfound identity - 2010's Big Moustache.

You can stream and download the album track / single Big Moustache via the ABoF SoundCloud page.

The album opens with a flood of distorted guitar and driving percussion, and it rarely lets up. Fury lacks pretension and represents the work of a band who have discovered a sound in which they feel comfortable, and infused it with critically biting lyrics, charting the highs and lows of trying to survive within an increasingly dog-eat-dog music industry.

Their single Who's Gonna Save Your Soul is the second taken from the album, and is inspired by society's fixation with the phenomenon of celebrity and the reasons behind it. With an aggressive guitar attack, and an understated vocal that builds into a primal scream as the track progresses, The Lowriders have created a song that harks back to the days when bands would captivate an audience in a smoky bar with their simple, yet effective, rock and roll grooves.

With a history of guerrilla gig campaigns, and a flair for the theatrical, 2011 is sure to mark the completion of the band's renaissance.

Who's Gonna Save Your Soul will be released via Adrenalin Records on October 3rd 2011, while the album, Fury will be released on October 31st.
