The Blood Arm return with ‘Infinite Nights’

Posted Tue, 07 May 2013

For fans of... The Dandy Warhols, Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes

“...playfully knowing indie rock...” - Q Magazine

After the release of the critically acclaimed 2011 album Turn And Face Me, The Blood Arm return with their fourth album Infinite Nights on June 17th 2013 via RIP Ben Lee Records. Infinite Nights showcases a more mature sound after a short break and a move from their LA home to the cool avant-garde city of Berlin.

"Bubblegum", a track taken from the new album, is available to download free now via the ABoF Soundcloud page.

Infinite Nights is about hopefulness, which seems apt after the big move. Alongside the band’s musical inspiration of Wings and Pulp, Haruki Murakami's novel 1Q84 also set the mood for the record, emphasising the sensation of restlessness and longing, whilst keeping their youthful view of the world around them. With keyboardist Dyan Valdes and frontman Nathaniel Fregoso based in Berlin, their fresh surroundings allowed them to creatively explore themes such as change, relationships and the process of getting older, which was reflected in the new, more experimental, direction of Infinite Nights.

“Wrong Side of the Law” starts the album with an air of introspection harking back to sounds akin to the Jesus and Mary Chain. However, with single “Midnight Moan”, The Blood Arm’s foot-stomping, upbeat tempos return as they hone a sound akin to Roxy Music. “Revenge” is mid naughties loveliness with a vintage Rolling Stones edge whilst “Sex Fiend” channels The B-52s throw back 60s indie pop. However, this is very much an album of two halves with The Blood Arm’s signature head bobbing, party tunes interlaced with reflective ballads and gorgeous acoustic tracks like “Oh Ali Bell!”, “Happy Hour” and “Let Me Be Your Guide”. Matthew Wheeler of The Rumble Strips also sings and plays drums on the album, adding to The Blood Arm’s fresh new direction.

The album was funded by PledgeMusic. PledgeMusic’s aim is to help bands fundraise for releases, encouraging them to participate with fans by creating unique ways to access exclusive content and material, such as a few scarves hand- knit by Dyan and unique songs written for pledgers.

The band plan to release a video for single Midnight Moan ahead of Infinite Nights, before touring in Europe and the UK over the summer and embarking on an extended tour in Autumn.

New Bands, New Releases, New Music!

German duo Me And My Drummer are set to make their impression on the UK music scene as they get ready to release their single You're A Runner on May 14th 2012, via Berlin label Sinnbus. They're new to the ABoF roster and they're already causing quite a stir with their video on NME and support from XFM's John Kennedy and Mary Ann Hobbs, BBC 6Music's Tom Ravenscroft and Amazing Radio.

After the release of their acclaimed single Younger, French Wives have released a stream of the album track "Sleep Tight" ahead of their debut album release Dream of the Inbetween out next month.

Glasgow's Quickbeam have released their sumptous debut single Seven Hundred Birds on Comets and Cartwheels. The video for for the single caused quite a stir and this is a very promising start for the band who have been compared to Low and Bon Iver.

After the release of last year's critically acclaimed album Turn And Face Me, The Blood Arm are already plotting their next assault after relocating from LA to Berlin. They've launched a PledgeMusic campaign to raise funds for their next release Sister City. They're already past the halfway point now and are giving away the free MP3 Over Your Head, to help promote the campaign, which is available to download now via the A Badge of Friendship Soundcloud page.

The Blood Arm Launch Pledge Campaign For Album ‘Sister City’

Posted Wed, 28 Mar 2012

After the release of last year’s critically acclaimed album Turn And Face Me, The Blood Arm are already plotting their next assault after relocating from LA to Berlin. They are launching a PledgeMusic campaign to raise funds for their next release Sister City.

Sister City will be the band’s fourth album release, completely self-funded on the band’s own imprint Pau! Records. With the money raised, they plan to record the album in June and release it early next year.

The band have made a video explaining why they have chosen PledgeMusic.

PledgeMusic is designed to help bands fundraise for forthcoming releases, encouraging them to participate with fans by creating fun and unique ways to access exclusive content and material. A portion of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross plus they’re giving fans incentives for pledging. Examples of incentives include signed copies of the new album, rare out of print t-shirts, tickets to exclusive Pledger-only acoustic shows, an opportunity to visit the band in the studio, a custom scarf hand-knit by Dyan, and even the chance to have the band write and record a personalised song.

The garage rocking four-piece are also giving away a free MP3 alongside the launch of their PledgeMusic campaign - Over Your Head, which is available to download now via the A Badge of Friendship Soundcloud page.

It’s been quite a year for the band with keyboardist Dyan Valdes and frontman Nathaniel Fregeso making the big move from LA to Berlin.

“We wanted to follow in the footsteps of some of our other favourite artists who have moved to Berlin and done the best work of their careers – David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Brian Eno...” explains Dyan. “As the music industry crumbles, it has become increasingly clear that the best way to sustain ourselves and our music is to work directly with the fans who support us. Pledgers can be confident that the money that they spend on this campaign will go directly into making the album (rather than paying for record company overhead).”

Third album Sister City will see a departure from the band’s sunny, garage rock bravado, a sound that Q Magazine called “playfully knowing indie rock” and Uncut hailed as “ramshackle boho party-rock”. The band’s recent move will be reflected in the music with themes of change, uncertainty and discover reflected in their new, more experimental, direction.

If you would like to speak to The Blood Arm about their PledgeMusic campaign or anything else, please email info@abadgeoffriendship.com.

ABoF Friday News Round-Up!

Posted Fri, 21 Oct 2011
It's been another busy week at ABoF HQ, as we've seen the press pouring in for our artists' almost faster than we can write about it! This week also marks the one year anniversary of us taking on our assistant Ed, and it's reminded us just how fast the time can fly when your busy and having fun!

The Birthday Suit kicked off the week with news that a track off their album was due to be played on Amazing Radio's Audition show, but don't worry if you missed it - it will be repeated this Saturday between 4-7pm, so catch it on your DAB radio, or just listen to it on your computer. The band were also chosen as The 405's Band Of The Day, and Rod Jones also took the time to chat to AAA Music about his latest solo project - so not a bad week at all, despite the unfortunate postponement of their UK tour.

Their debut album, The Eleventh Hour, is due for release on 11th of November 2011 (that's 11.11.11!) via Sing It Alone Records, the band have made the album available to download from their official website today at a special early bird price (until the official album release) for fans - £5!

As well as picking up a fantastic review of their live show from Extreme Listening Mode, but perhaps the most exciting development for them this week was news that NME.com had featured their video for album track, "She's A Guillotine", on their site!

The Moth & The Mirror also had a busy week, with reviews for their debut album, Honestly, This World popping up in Stereoboard, while they also secured the much coveted Band Of The Day from The 405.

They also announced they were giving away a free track to all their fans, a remix of the single - "Germany (Headron Remix)". The track is available to download free via the ABoF SoundCloud page.

Honestly, This World will be released on 7th November 2011 via Olive Grove Records as a download and limited edition CD.

Coming up...

ABoF will be gracing the pages of next week's issue of NME. Paul and Claire, amongst other independent folk working in music, were interviewed about A Badge of Friendship, what we do and how we started.

We'll also be dusting off our glad rags on Monday evening, and heading down to the Q Awards aftershow at the Cafe De Paris to bust out an ABoF flavoured DJ set. This is the second time we've DJ-ed the aftershow, last year we DJ-ed before Mark Ronson and the Chemical Brothers. It's one of our favourite events so we'll make sure we take some pictures and post them up next week!

Hello September: News from ABoF HQ!

Posted Fri, 02 Sep 2011

Festival season is done and dusted, the wellies are being put away for another year and we're looking forward to a very busy September here at ABoF HQ.

Since it's the start of the month, we thought we'd send a little update about what we've been working on over the summer and what we have to look forward to. If you've any questions about what you read below, please get in touch: info@abadgeoffriendship.

Free MP3s can always be downloaded from our Soundcloud page and any other information you need about the artists, labels and other companies we work with can be found on our official website. Thanks for reading - we hope you have a great month ahead!

Last.fm's Ghostpoet Pop-Session

It's no secret that we've been working with Last.fm this summer to help create online buzz and PR around their partnership with HP, promoting "The Power of Sound". HP and Last.fm’s partnership celebrates the Beats audio technology that comes with HP Premium PC, laptop and tablet devices through a series of live music events and artist interviews, curated by Last.fm.

The partnership kicked-off with a number of pop-up acoustic gigs which took place around London. The first two were a big success; Slow Club enchanted fans and passers by alike in Soho Square and The Boxer Rebellion got the tourists clapping along on Carnaby Street.

Ghostpoet was the latest to get the pop-up session treatment, playing to a packed-out crown at The Big Chill Bar on Brick Lane in August. The video of the session is available to watch now on Last.fm's YouTube channel.

For the latest news on the partnership, special giveaways and unique content, check out HP's Facebook and Twitter pages.

September Releases

We've lots of different releases out this month from post-rock to folk and straight-up indie, check them out below...

Copenhagen post-rockers, The Shaking Sensations, initially formed to escape the confines of their small, desolate and windy town in western Denmark. Little did they know, that in doing so, the five-piece would build a reputation that would see them join a group of up-and-coming post-rock bands following in the footsteps of heavyweights like Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Their debut album East of Youth will make you fall in love with post-rock all over again as they add a new energy and reinvigorate the post-rock genre.

East of Youth is out September 12th on Pad & Pen Records. Download the album track "Glass Wings" HERE.

Following on from the success of their UK tour, and their previous single, Hopscotch Machine Gun Madness, Reading-based A Genuine Freakshow are back with the third single - the double A-side Our Bodies / New Houses. Fresh from their Reading and Leeds Festival performances, the guys are also about to embark upon a UK tour to support the release.

The band are also giving away a four track sampler taken from their album Oftentimes. Just visit their official website and enter your details.

Our Bodies / New Houses is out on Peartree Records on 26th September 2011.

After building up a stellar reputation among fellow musicians while touring Europe and the US, Keith Top Of The Pops & His Minor UK Indie Celebrity All-Star Backing Band is releasing his debut album - Fuck You! I'm Keith Top Of The Pops. Keith has attracted a fantastic line up of musicians to record alongside him, including Dyan Valdes of The Blood Arm, Fruitbat and Jimbob from Carter USM, Keith Murray and Chris Cain from We Are Scientists and Ian Catstiltskin, Eddie Argos and Jasper Future from Art Brut. As a result, the sound is a collection of wonderfully chaotic freeform rock tunes that sound like a cross between The Fall and Half Man Half Biscuit, with more bitter and twisted undertones.

Fuck You! I'm Keith Top Of The Pops is out on Corporate Records on 26th September 2011. The album track "I Hate Your Band" is available to download HERE.

Sweet Baboo is Stephen Black, a native of the North Wales countryside and a single-minded, idiosyncratic, contrary singer-songwriter who possesses an ear for a sparkling melody, a restless soul, and a gift for a deft lyrical turn; from darkly funny to piercingly tender, twinklingly boastful to deliciously self-deprecating. Following the release of his third album, I'm a Dancer/Songs About Sleeping, Black has returned in 2011 with his latest EP - Girl Under A Tree.

Black's productivity is all the more remarkable given his extra-curricular activities, which have seen him working with an ever-growing array of musicians. This year alone Black has played on albums by Cate Le Bon, Slow Club and H. Hawkline, and has been a regular part of the touring line-ups for all three bands.

Girl Under A Tree will be released via Shape Records on 19th Sept 2011 on limited 10” white vinyl / download. Download the EP track "The Day I Lost My Voice" HERE.

The summer that was…

Our biggest successes this summer have been two bands that couldn't be more different - The Blood Arm and Knifeworld.

The Blood Arm returned with their second album Turn And Face Me. Although some reviews were mixed, the general vibe from the press was of admiration and respect for the band who clearly wrote their songs with a nod back to greats such as Dexys Midnight Runners, Elvis Costello And The Attractions and Adam And The Ants.

Uncut said the band evoked "a classic lineage of ramshackle boho party-rock", whilst WORD called their sound "a good one". Even punk rock magazine Big Cheese picked up on the album saying that the music "will undoubtedly get you out of your seat".

Meanwhile, Knifeworld rocked the alternative press with the release of their EP Dear Lord, No Deal. The band featured in magazines Classic Rock Prog and Rock A Rolla plus alternative music and culture website The Quietus.

The reviews also poured in with Rock Sound picking up on frontman Kavus Torabi's unique songwriting mentioning that "you won't forget him in a hurry". The aforementioned Classic Rock Prog, always big supporters of the band called the EP "a jazzy workout; a rapid metronymic group vocal; a pause for quiet reflection; an ambitious psychedelic wash of melodies…". Quite a description there and we whole heartedly agree!

And the rest…

Congratulations for making it this far and thanks for reading… so what else have we been up to?

Well, for starters we've also been working with vintage recording studio An Endless Room. The studio currently has a competition on MTV UK's website to win free studio time. The busy folks at Endless HQ are also planning a regular podcast which will feature special guests talking about music, the studio, their own projects and also tinkering about on some of An Endless Room's weird and wonderful equipment. We'll have more updates on that soon.

Paul ABoF also wrote an article recently for This Is Fake DIY's blog. The blog had a feature running called "The Beautiful Game" and Paul was asked to write something about Celtic FC.

Claire ABoF is still busy writing and drawing webcomics in her spare time. The webcomic series "Socially Inept" is currently being published by our friends over at The 405, whilst The Cyclopes (an ode to the X-Men) is being published on Beyond Comic Books.

Super assistant Ed has been frustratingly trying to pass his driving test all month. You can read about it on the ABoF blog. Let's wish him the best of luck!

A Badge of Friendship: News Round-Up!

Posted Fri, 19 Aug 2011
Another busy week here at ABoF HQ. With a steady stream of press for our bands as ever and Last.fm's last pop-up session set for next week, here's our little round-up of what's been going down before we kick back and enjoy the weekend!

Ghostpoet to perform Last.fm pop-up session!

Our bands rock!

This month's issue of Rock Sound magazine features both The Blood Arm and Indian Red Lopez.

The Blood Arm were positively compared to not just The Strokes, but also Franz Ferdinand, whilst Indian Red Lopez were hailed for their "understated charm".

A Genuine Freakshow found their forthcoming double A-side single, Our Bodies / New Houses already picking up some good press well ahead of it's September 26th release date. AAA Music and Fame Magazine were the first to get on board and spread the news about the release and the four track sampler from their debut album Oftentimes that the band are currently giving away via their official website.

New to the roster, Keith Top of the Pop & His Minor UK Indie Celebrity All-Star Backing Band have already confirmed a lead album review for their debut Fuck You! I'm Keith Top of the Pops in next month's Artrocker plus Popmatters had already said some great things about it too.

Blog love!

It's also worth keeping an eye on the ABoF blog. This week, Ed had a mini rant about chatty gig goers. We also checked in with Punk Rock Ist Nicht Tot", who made our Blog of the Week.

Another great review for LA rockers,The Blood Arm. Rock Sound Magazine have cast their ears over the band's latest album, Turn And Face Me, and were impressed with what they heard - even going so far as to compare them to a hybrid of Julian Casablancas and Alex Kapranos. ABoF News Round Up Vol. 1

Posted Fri, 12 Aug 2011
So much news goes out on a daily basis from ABoF HQ, we thought we'd round it up all here in one lovely news story. Our ABoF news round-up will happen every Friday afternoon including a mixture of what's been going on with our artists, what's gone up on our blog and any ABoF related stirrings.

Label Love

This week, the UK was gripped by riots up and down the country. Thousands of people have been affected, and several small businesses may have to shut up shop for good - and all because of some opportunistic looters smashing up anything in their path.

The PIAS distribution centre in Enfield was burnt down during these riots and many of Britain's indie labels lost valuable stock.

Two people that are particularly close to ABoF's heart are Dan Salter (Echoes And Dust) and Hannah Morgan (Rumour Cubes), who, early in the hours of Tuesday morning, started a Twitter campaign that quickly went viral. They're the people behind the LabelLove - a PIAS Benefit.

We interviewed them on our blog this week to find out more about the campaign.

An Endless Room: Exclusive competition on MTV!

MTV UK have posted up an exclusive competition to win two peak recording sessions at An Endless Room - the iconic music studio based in Primrose Hill, London.

The competition closes on 30th September 2011.Bands and musicians can enter the competition via the MTV UK website.

ABoF bands make some noise!

The Blood Arm only just released their second album Turn And Face Me. Over the last week the band have seen a whirlwind of brilliant reviews and great covering from magazines like Uncut, WORD, Big Cheese and Q with more to follow!

The "Scots massive" have also been doing particularly well. IndianRedLopez released their debut album Empty Your Lungs And Breathe whilst Esperi released The EP.

Press for all our bands can be found on our artists' profile pages.

Coming up!

In the next week look out for the return of A Genuine Freakshow, releasing a brand news single Our Bodies / New Houses. Plus electro rockers The Unkindness of Ravens bring news of their double A-side offering Virus | Viper.

Keith Top Of The Pops & His Minor UK Indie Celebrity All-Star Backing Band release debut album Fuck You! I'm Keith Top Of The Pops.

We'll also be introducing new artists Mausi and Sweet Baboo to the ABoF roster.

Plus exciting news about Last.fm
's last pop-up show of the summer. We'll announce the Mercury Award nominated band next week. The session will take please on the 22nd August.

News: The Blood Arm release “Turn And Face Me”

Posted Mon, 23 May 2011

The Blood Arm return to the UK with brand new album, Turn And Face Me. Their sound comes across like something taken from an alternate universe, where Dexys Midnight Runners, Elvis Costello And The Attractions and Adam And The Ants formed a super group and updated their sound for the new millennium..

Their second album, Turn And Face Me, is an amalgamation of everything that made the late 70s pub rock and punk scene such an exciting period, with more than a heady dash of first wave Brit pop. The explosive opener "She's A Guillotine" is a blend of tribal drums, classic rock 'n' roll guitar and a backing track filled with organs, piano and percussion that will get listeners jumping out of their seats and on to the dance floors. It's a fantastic introduction to the rest of the album, and leaves you with no doubt that the rest of this release is going to be a real barn stormer. "Relentless Love" completely strips down the production, allowing Nathaniel's vocals to take the limelight, layered over the top of minimalist drum machine, uncluttered guitar and simple, yet effective hooks. The rest of the album sounds like an instant party, each track creating an atmosphere that's fun, exciting and almost impossible not to stomp your feet to. It closes with "Forever Is Strange", a slow tempo torch song that allows listeners to come back down to earth after the fast paced experience of the previous 11 tracks. It's a great way to wrap up the proceedings, but the urge to play the whole album again from beginning to end is almost too delicious to resist.

The track "Introducing Randy Newman" from the album is available as a free download. If you can't see the Soundcloud waveform below, you can grab it from our Soundcloud page.

Originally from LA, the four-piece are Nathaniel Fregoso (vocals), Dyan Valdés (Keyboards), Zebastian Carlisle (guitar) and Zachary Amos (drums). They began as the brainchild of UCLA film student, Nathaniel, and weren't fully realised until he met guitarist Zebastian in a karaoke bar in Koreatown. The two came together to start molding their sound, and it wasn't long before they invited classically trained pianist, Dyan and microbiology student Zachary to join the group, creating the final line up of what is set to be one of the hottest bands this year. They've already made waves in this country, with debut album Lie Lover Lie and single Suspicious Character being praised by UK publications such as the NME (8/10), Artrocker Magazine ("best debut album of the year") and The Guardian (5/5), while their energetic live shows, touring alongside The Killers, Maximo Park and Hot Hot Heat (to name but a few), have won over British audiences. They're also no strangers to hearing their music appear on screen, having already been featured in the blockbuster creature feature Cloverfield as well as US Television sensations The OC, Gossip Girl and the US version of Shameless.

With the album's UK release set for July 4th, the sky really is the limit for The Blood Arm.
