The Birthday Suit announce single ‘All Of This Everything’

Posted Wed, 05 Mar 2014

The Birthday Suit’s second single All Of This Everything will be released on 17th March 2014 via Sing It Alone. The single was chosen by Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6Music listeners, with fans choosing between two tracks from the forthcoming album (A Hollow Hole Of Riches) - "All Of This Everything" and "Tonight Is Broken Hearted".

You can stream the single on our Soundcloud page.

A Bigger World was the first single released from the band’s forthcoming album, which featured Scott Hutchison from Frightened Rabbit. Since A Bigger World’s release, Rod has guested on Lamacq’s show twice and the single made the XFM evening playlist with support from Danielle Perry.

With their first two albums, Rod was finding his feet after Idlewild announced their indefinite hiatus but the tracks found on A Hollow Hole Of Riches are more cohesive. The Birthday Suit are very much in keeping with Scotland’s finest musical exports, writing tunes that are exciting and diverse, songs brewed with heart and passion, which tell stories, hearts on sleeves for all to see.

Physical and digital promos are available for radio and press. The band are also available for interviews.

The Birthday Suit’s ‘A Bigger World’ out now!

Posted Tue, 05 Nov 2013

The Birthday Suit's latest single A Bigger World is out now! The single features Scott Hutchinson from Frightened Rabbit and is a rousing three minutes of swelling vocals, strings and catchy riffs. With this latest offering, The Birthday Suit are stepping forward with their heads held high as Rod Jones transcends his Idlewild roots, proving himself to be one of Scotland's finest songwriting talents.

Rod from The Birthday Suit recently featured as a guest on Steve Lamacq's Roundtable. The single also made the XFM evening playlist, has been championed by BBC Radio Scotland's Vic Galloway and Amazing Radio's Jim Gellatly and Gill Mills.

Fans will receive a free download of the single free by pre-ordering the band's third album A Hollow Hole Of Riches via Pledge.

The Birthday Suit's video for 'A Bigger World' is available to watch on YouTube now!

Recently, a strange online campaign to boycott Idlewild members' side projects was launched in the hope that Idlewild would return to record new material. You can read more about this on NME.com. Rod responded with an open letter to fans, which can be read on The Birthday Suit's Facebook page.

However, this hasn't stopped the band who are currently on a UK tour to help promote the single. Tour dates can be found on the band's official website.

A Bigger World is the first single from the band's third album A Hollow Hole Of Riches, which will be released on 3rd March 2014. A Bigger World sets the scene for the album's overall theme of isolation, as each one of us exists within our own small world, but that's not to say the lyrics are bleak - far from it. It's a celebration of diversity, and the constantly shifting nature of perspective.

A Bigger World is out now and available to download free with all pre-orders of the album, for more information, visit The Birthday Suit's official website.

April Releases

Death Rattle - Fortress EP

For fans of... The Knife, Zola Jesus, Bat For Lashes

London based girl/boy duo Death Rattle release of their eagerly anticipated Fortress EP on April 29th via Frontal Noize. This four track EP follows on from HE&I, which saw support from John Kennedy (XFM), Tom Robinson (BBC 6Music) and Amazing Radio.

Continuing where HE&l left us, Fortress is its insular, brooding cousin subtly creating an even bleaker, impending-doom feel that their previous release always hinted towards with the band's influences - Depeche Mode, Fever Ray and NIN - becoming ever more apparent.

As a precursor to Fortress Death Rattle released The Blows as a free track with Amazing Radio championing it along with respected blogger The Von Pip Musical Express. White Ropes (out 8th April) will be the first single lifted from the EP, which returns the soft fragility similar to that heard on the duo's low-fi, apocalyptic cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'The Chain'.

Check out a preview of Fortress on the Death Rattle's YouTube channel.

Fat Goth - Surf's Down

For fans of... Mike Patton, Mclusky, The Jesus Lizard

Fat Goth kicked off their year in style with the release of their second full length LP Stud. Their free live single, Surf's Down, which was released this week, was supported by a video and two free live b-sides of the album tracks "We Film The Camps Elysees" and "Creepy Lounge". Along with this release, Fat Goth are set for a full Introducing feature in this week's Kerrang! Magazine (out 3rd April) as well as a New Blood feature in Artrocker end of April setting them up for an unstoppable summer.

A flurry of online press ensued, which saw the band steadily build a loyal fanbase grabbing the attention of BBC Radio 1 Scotland, The Scottish Sun and, most recently, Clash Magazine, with Frightened Rabbit choosing their track ‘Auld Archie’ as a Track of the Day on the Clash website. With all this already under their collective belt, Flutes begin the year on a high and are pleased to announce the forthcoming release of their single Kilburn on 8th April. The band recently released the b-side 'What Is Love' (a cover of the 90s Haddaway track) as a free download and have a single launch show planned at The Good Ship in, you guessed it, Kilburn, London.

Doug Stanhope DVD Release!

We've been working with comedian Doug Stanhope on his forthcoming DVD release Before Turning the Gun on Himself. The DVD is out on Roadrunner Comedy, the sister label to Roadrunner Records, home to bands like Slipknot, Rush and Rob Zombie.

The DVD (his tenth DVD release to date) will come with a bonus audio CD. To coincide with the DVD release, he will also be hitting the road, doing an extensive UK tour throughout March and April. The audio CD will be released on March 5th 2012, with the DVD to follow a few weeks after. Stanhope's act offers a potent double dose of the abrasive, brutally honest brand of standup comedy that has established him as a one-of-a-kind phenomenon.

You can watch Stanhope introduce his involvement with Roadrunner Comedy on Roadrunner Record's YouTube channel.

"...with material this good, Idlewild's hiatus could be rather long." - Kerrang! Magazine

"...when the throttle is left open... the goosebumps really start to form." - This Is Fake DIY

"...a rewarding listen." - Big Cheese Magazine

Whilst Idlewild have been on hiatus, guitarist / songwriter Rod Jones has been busy with his solo roject The Birthday Suit. Their debut album, The Eleventh Hour, is out today!

The album is a return to the noisy pop moments that originally established him as a legend in the UK music scene. Tracks like "Do You Ever?" and "On My Own" hark back to the 100 Broken Windows-esque sounds that made Idlewild one of Scotland's (or, in fact, the UK's!) best indie exports. However, it's the more introspective tracks like "They Say I Love You" and "Talking Over You" that showcase Rod's true talent as an accomplished songwriter.

If you'd like a taster of the the album, you can stream tracks on The Birthday Suit's official website or download the free album track "Do You Ever?" from the A Badge of Friendship Soundcloud page.

We've got some great releases out in the next few weeks and ABoF have been featured in the November 5th issue of NME - not bad for the first week of the month! ABoF News - NME, Q Awards and more...

Congratulations for making it this far and thanks for reading - so what else have we been up to?

Paul and Claire were featured in the November 5th issue of NME, talking about the financial aspects of running an independent company and how they cope on a day-to-day basis. Make sure you pick up a copy this week!

Team ABoF donned their glad rags and headed down to the Q Awards aftershow party to play the first DJ set of the night, and also as an excuse to people watch in the VIP area. It also coincided with assistant Ed's first anniversary with the company - so what better excuse for a party?

Paul drew a line in the sand with the scenes that form around music, bemoaning the rigid rules that need to be adhered to to be considered "true" to them.

The hairier members of Team ABoF (that's Paul and Ed by the way!) took out their razors on November 1st, to rid themselves of their beards in support of Movember.

It's going to be a few days before their 'mos really kick in, so in the meantime it would be great if you could spare some pennies for the cause: Donate to
Paul or Ed - every little bit counts!

    October round-up (stuff we forgot!)...

We have been so busy over the last two months, we completely forgot to send out an October newsletter! Here's what went down last month...

The Lowriders started the month releasing single Who's Gonna Save Your Soul and wrapped it up with their much anticipated debut album, Fury, with one of its tracks, "Big Moustache", earning the much coveted "Track of The Day" on Classic Rock Magazine (online).

Fury was released via Adrenalin Records on October 31st.
You can buy it for £7.99 from iTunes and £6.99 from Amazon.

Mausi's single, Sol was released on October 10th via Racecar Music, enhancing their reputation to produce fun, danceable tunes, building on the pop foundations with subtle disco influences from the likes of Damn Arms and Pony Pony Run Run. They must have done something right, as NME.com featured the fantastic video for their single on their site, and it seems you can't walk into a Topshop in the UK without hearing the track!

Sol was officially released this week via Racecar Music. You can download it via the band's official website.

The Unkindness Of Ravens made a triumphant return to the UK with their new single, the double A-side Virus | Viper.

The single(s) were accompanied by two amazing videos, both of which were featured on Artrocker Magazine (online) (who also gave them a fantastic 4 star review) and NME.com.

Virus | Viper is released via Sonic Fire Records. The single is available to buy on iTunes, but you can buy it cheaper via the band's Bandcamp page.

    ABoF Friday News Round Up

    Posted Fri, 28 Oct 2011
Another week gone by, another week closer to Christmas! It's been another busy one at ABoF HQ, with the news flowing in thick and fast and our DJ set at the Q Awards Aftershow Party going down a storm, before we retired to the free bar to enjoy some medicinal whisky. This week also saw Paul post on the blog for the first time, and what a great debut! He took on the DIY scene, and how alternative culture, and indeed any form of individuality, is cheapened once a hardcore set of rules is put in place. It's a great piece, and we highly recommend you check it out.

The news has been non-stop for The Moth & The Mirror's divine debut album, Honestly, This World, with reviews pouring in from 17 Seconds, Subba-Cultcha and Who's Jack. They've also seen the Headron remix of their album track, "Germany", posted all over the web. Not a bad week at all for the Scottish supergroup.

Honestly, This World will be released on November 7th via Olive Grove Records as a download and limited edition CD.

The Birthday Suit have also enjoyed a great week of press, as not only were they featured on the Sourmash Mixtape Vol.2: Wax And Feathers, but Classic Rock Magazine (online) featured "Do You Ever?", a track from their upcoming debut album, The Eleventh Hour, and made it their "Track Of The Day"!

Although The Eleventh Hour is due for release on 11th of November 2011 (that's 11.11.11) via Sing It Alone Records, the band have made the album available to download from their official website at a special early bird price for fans - £5! This discounted price will expire on the 11th November so get in there quick!

The first of these sessions will be a free live performance from DELS (aka Kieran Dickins) on the 7th November at The Lock Tavern - there are no tickets required, so just turn up at 8pm. November Goodies

Coming up in November, we've got two brilliant new debut releases from The Birthday Suit (Rod Jones of Idlewild) and The Moth & The Mirror (featuring members of Arab Strap, Frightened Rabbit and Admiral Fallow).

Idlewild guitarist / songwriter Rod Jones, is back with a remarkable new solo project, The Birthday Suit. Their debut album, The Eleventh Hour, is a return to the noisy pop moments that originally established him as a legend in the UK music scene.

This debut offering sees him deliver some of the most passionate, fiery and powerful songs he has ever written. It creates a sound that captures the sound of early Idlewild albums, such as 100 Broken Windows - an album that was recently voted the number one Scottish album of the last decade by readers of The Skinny magazine.

The Eleventh Hour is due for release on 11th of November 2011 via Sing It Alone Records. You can stream and download the album track "Do You Ever?" via the ABoF Soundcloud page.

The Moth & The Mirror have been proclaimed as a Scottish supergroup, comprising of members taken from an array of Scottish talent including: Stacey Sievwright from The Reindeer Section and Arab Strap (vocals/guitar), Gordon Skene from Frightened Rabbit (guitar/vocals), Louis Abbott from Admiral Fallow and Song of Return (guitar/vocals) Kevin McCarvel (bass), Iain Sandilands (percussion) and Peter Murch (drums).

Honestly, This World is the band's debut album following on from their first official release, the single, Germany. It's a melodic tour de force; the arrangement of the backing track creating deeply textured soundscapes that elevate Stacey's vocals to a transcendental plateau to captivate the listener.

Honestly, This World will be released on November 7th via Olive Grove Records as a download and limited edition CD. You can stream and download the Headron remix of the album track "Germany" via the ABoF Soundcloud page.

    ABoF Friday News Round-Up!

    Posted Fri, 21 Oct 2011
It's been another busy week at ABoF HQ, as we've seen the press pouring in for our artists' almost faster than we can write about it! This week also marks the one year anniversary of us taking on our assistant Ed, and it's reminded us just how fast the time can fly when your busy and having fun!

The Birthday Suit kicked off the week with news that a track off their album was due to be played on Amazing Radio's Audition show, but don't worry if you missed it - it will be repeated this Saturday between 4-7pm, so catch it on your DAB radio, or just listen to it on your computer. The band were also chosen as The 405's Band Of The Day, and Rod Jones also took the time to chat to AAA Music about his latest solo project - so not a bad week at all, despite the unfortunate postponement of their UK tour.

Their debut album, The Eleventh Hour, is due for release on 11th of November 2011 (that's 11.11.11!) via Sing It Alone Records, the band have made the album available to download from their official website today at a special early bird price (until the official album release) for fans - £5!

As well as picking up a fantastic review of their live show from Extreme Listening Mode, but perhaps the most exciting development for them this week was news that NME.com had featured their video for album track, "She's A Guillotine", on their site!

Download the free MP3 "Introducing Randy Newman", from Turn and Face Me, from the ABoF Soundcloud page.

The Blood Arm - Introducing Randy Newman by abadgeoffriendship

Their album Turn And Face Me is out now on Pau! / Snowhite and is available to buy via iTunes.

The Moth & The Mirror also had a busy week, with reviews for their debut album, Honestly, This World popping up in Stereoboard, while they also secured the much coveted Band Of The Day from The 405.

They also announced they were giving away a free track to all their fans, a remix of the single - "Germany (Headron Remix)". The track is available to download free via the ABoF SoundCloud page.

The Moth & The Mirror - Germany (Headron Remix) by abadgeoffriendship

Honestly, This World will be released on 7th November 2011 via Olive Grove Records as a download and limited edition CD.

    Coming up...

ABoF will be gracing the pages of next week's issue of NME. Paul and Claire, amongst other independent folk working in music, were interviewed about A Badge of Friendship, what we do and how we started.

We'll also be dusting off our glad rags on Monday evening, and heading down to the Q Awards aftershow at the Cafe De Paris to bust out an ABoF flavoured DJ set. This is the second time we've DJ-ed the aftershow, last year we DJ-ed before Mark Ronson and the Chemical Brothers. It's one of our favourite events so we'll make sure we take some pictures and post them up next week!

The Birthday Suit - UK Tour Postponed!

    Posted Mon, 17 Oct 2011

Idlewild guitarist / songwriter Rod Jones, is back with a remarkable new solo project, The Birthday Suit. Unfortunately, having only just announced their UK tour, the band have had to postpone heading out on the road due to a recurring shoulder injury. The dates are currently being rebooked and hopefully there will be a new tour announcement very soon.

    Rod made this statement:

"It's with a heavy heart and sincere disappointment that we are forced to postpone the first leg of The Birthday Suit's debut tour. A recurring shoulder injury has rendered me unable to play for up to 4 weeks. Dundee, Stirling and Glenrothes will go ahead in late Nov/Dec and we will be rescheduling all other dates for a February tour due to venue availability. We are all very thankful for your support and patience." - Rod Jones

The Birthday Suit's debut album, The Eleventh Hour, is a return to the noisy pop moments that originally established Rod as a legend in the UK music scene. Although the album is officially released on 11.11.11 at 11am (nice and easy to remember!), the band have made the album available to download from their official website at a special early bird price for fans - £5! Introducing… The Birthday Suit

    Posted Mon, 26 Sep 2011

Idlewild guitarist / songwriter Rod Jones, is back with a remarkable new solo project, The Birthday Suit. Their debut album, The Eleventh Hour, is a return to the noisy pop moments that originally established him as a legend in the UK music scene.

Formed with Roddy Woomble and Colin Newton in Edinburgh in 1995, Idlewild spent the last 16 years becoming one of Scotland's most beloved indie rock acts. But after seven studio albums, four top 20 singles and numerous world tours, including supporting bands such as REM, Pearl Jam, U2 and The Rolling Stones, the band decided to take a break to concentrate on their individual solo projects.

With Idlewild currently on hiatus, Rod formed The Birthday Suit with a selection of friends and local musicians. Debut album The Eleventh Hour sees him deliver some of the most passionate, fiery and powerful songs he has ever written. It creates a sound that captures the sound of early Idlewild albums, such as 100 Broken Windows - an album that was recently voted the number one Scottish album of all time by readers of The Skinny magazine.
