Esperi’s debut album ‘In A Moment, Emotion, Sentiment’ out now!

Posted Mon, 02 Jul 2012

For fans of... Owen, American Football, Elliott Smith, Mark Kozelek

"Juxtaposing acoustic guitar and a whole host of odd instruments and percussion, Esperi mainman Chris Lee-Marr seems to be making all the right waves." - The List

Hot on the heels of his EP, Melancholics Anonymous, Esperi return with debut album In A Moment, Emotion, Sentiment out now on Fall On Records.

The record has already scored 7/10 on The Line of Best Fit claiming the "...softer moments can be likened to Sun Kill Moon." The album has also been supported by For Folk's Sake where you can exclusively stream the album for free.

"Silo The Fire", a track from the album, is available to download free from the A Badge of Friendship Soundcloud page.

The record continues Chris Marr's exploration of the heartfelt moments of his and our lives, with touching lyrics that convey a naivety and sensitivity. It's this child like view of the world that sets Marr apart from his contemporaries and is aided by his use of everyday items as musical instruments. While acoustic instrumentation is mainly the order of the day, tracks such as "Dialled" illustrate Marr's uniqueness with the sounds of his bike recorded onto the track. Children's toys and everyday tools heavily influence proceedings on "Hearts Part 2", as weird and wonderful sounds envelope the listener throughout the ten minutes and fifteen seconds closing track.

You can also watch the video for "Silo The Fire" on Esperi's YouTube page.

Producer Robin Sutherland recorded the album on the East Coast of Scotland featuring an array of guest musicians such as Jon Adams (Vasquez) on drums, Kevin Black (Laeto, Fat Goth) on bass, Ged Grimes (Deacon Blue) on double bass and the Korda Quartet all featuring. The end result is a record rich in both lyrical content and musicianship further enhanced by Marr's whispering gentle tones and expert guitar picking skills.

Having previously gained support from the likes of Q Magazine (Track of the Day online), The 405, Drowned In Sound and The List, In A Moment, Emotion, Sentiment is a stylish debut album that is sure to impress fans old and new. It caps an eventful six months for Esperi with the release of Melancholics Anonymous EP, the debut album In A Moment, Emotion, Sentiment, a UK tour and a showcase for GoNorth.

In A Moment, Emotion, Sentiment out now on Fall On Records and is available to buy now via Esperi's Bandcamp page.

Digital promos for review are available upon request.

"Juxtaposing acoustic guitar and a whole host of odd instruments and percussion, Esperi mainman Chris Lee-Marr seems to be making all the right waves." - The List

Hot on the heels of his EP, Melancholics Anonymous, Chris Marr’s Esperi continue to produce a high level quality of output with the release of debut album In A Moment, Emotion, Sentiment released on July 2nd 2012 via Fall On Records.

The record continues Marr’s exploration of the heartfelt moments of his and our lives, with touching lyrics that convey a naivety and sensitivity. Esperi’s ‘Melancholics Anonymous’ EP out now!

Posted Mon, 21 May 2012

For fans of... Owen, American Football, Elliott Smith, Mark Kozelek

"Juxtaposing acoustic guitar and a whole host of odd instruments and percussion, Esperi mainman Chris Lee-Marr seems to be making all the right waves." - The List

Multi-instrumentalist Chris Marr makes a welcome return under the guise of Esperi with the release of the EP Melancholics Anonymous, which is out now on Fall On Records.

The record typifies Marr's ability to write heart-warming, personal and evocative tunes, enhanced by the use of an array of weird and wonderful instruments ranging from strings and bells to kalimba and chimes to toys and bikes! Embracing the subject matters of love, friendship, longing and loss, Marr constructs sensitive yet up lifting music aided by childlike percussion and skilful guitar playing.

The video for the EP track "Come Dine With Me" is available to watch on Esperi's YouTube channel now.

Tracks such as "Homer" and "Come Dine With Me" showcase Marr’s song writing ability as well as a keen ear for melody and hooks, not to mention delicate vocals and expert intricate guitar picking. "Broadlands" creates a lovely segue between the first and second half of the EP, a short track emphasising the work of an expert story teller as Marr whispers, "you're eyes never too hard to disguise, you're face never to hard to embrace."

"Come Dine With Me" is also available to download now from the A Badge of Friendship Soundcloud page.

There is an impressive list of guest musicians featuring on tracks like “Homer” including The Korda String Quartet, Jon Adam (Vasquez), Kev Black (Laeto, Fat Goth) and Ged Grimes (Deacon Blue) contribute as well as the experimental use of a number of unfamiliar "instruments" to add that sense of uniqueness fans of Esperi have become used to.

With the release of the Melancholics Anonymous EP, a tour in the offing, a showcase at the GoNorth festival followed by his debut album In A Moment, Emotion, Sentiment released July 2nd, Esperi look set to continue their sharp rise in the singer-songwriter genre as well as introducing the wider music community to their poignant, soothing sound.

Melancholics Anonymous is out now via Fall On Records.

Digital promos for review are available upon request.

ABoF News Round Up Vol. 1

Posted Fri, 12 Aug 2011
So much news goes out on a daily basis from ABoF HQ, we thought we'd round it up all here in one lovely news story. Our ABoF news round-up will happen every Friday afternoon including a mixture of what's been going on with our artists, what's gone up on our blog and any ABoF related stirrings.

Label Love

This week, the UK was gripped by riots up and down the country. Thousands of people have been affected, and several small businesses may have to shut up shop for good - and all because of some opportunistic looters smashing up anything in their path.

The PIAS distribution centre in Enfield was burnt down during these riots and many of Britain's indie labels lost valuable stock.

Two people that are particularly close to ABoF's heart are Dan Salter (Echoes And Dust) and Hannah Morgan (Rumour Cubes), who, early in the hours of Tuesday morning, started a Twitter campaign that quickly went viral. They're the people behind the LabelLove - a PIAS Benefit.

We interviewed them on our blog this week to find out more about the campaign.

An Endless Room: Exclusive competition on MTV!

MTV UK have posted up an exclusive competition to win two peak recording sessions at An Endless Room - the iconic music studio based in Primrose Hill, London.

The competition closes on 30th September 2011.Bands and musicians can enter the competition via the MTV UK website.

ABoF bands make some noise!

The Blood Arm only just released their second album Turn And Face Me. Over the last week the band have seen a whirlwind of brilliant reviews and great covering from magazines like Uncut, WORD, Big Cheese and Q with more to follow!

The "Scots massive" have also been doing particularly well. IndianRedLopez released their debut album Empty Your Lungs And Breathe whilst Esperi released The EP.

Press for all our bands can be found on our artists' profile pages.

Coming up!

In the next week look out for the return of A Genuine Freakshow, releasing a brand news single Our Bodies / New Houses. Plus electro rockers The Unkindness of Ravens bring news of their double A-side offering Virus | Viper.

Keith Top Of The Pops & His Minor UK Indie Celebrity All-Star Backing Band release debut album Fuck You! I'm Keith Top Of The Pops.

We'll also be introducing new artists Mausi and Sweet Baboo to the ABoF roster.

Plus exciting news about Last.fm's last pop-up show of the summer. We'll announce the Mercury Award nominated band next week. The session will take please on the 22nd August.

Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard: Ticket Information

Posted Mon, 01 Aug 2011

A sunny Monday in London - at last - and just in time for Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard before they hit London tomorrow. The guys are over from NYC to play a few dates here before they jet off to China and then back again to Brighton.

Tomorrow they are due to play The Lexington. The show sold out in a matter of weeks but despite this we've been receiving lots of pleading emails asking for tickets and whether we can reserve any for those wishing to come. Unfortunately, we can't reserve tickets for people. There will be 5 tickets (yes, that's 5!) on the door tomorrow priced at £11.

Tickets on the door are on a "first come first served" basis and we cannot reserve anyones name on a centralised list. If you would like to buy a ticket, just be sure to turn up early! Doors are at 7.30pm but because this is a sold out show and there will be high demand we suggest you get there a little earlier.

Our very own Esperi will be the only support for this show. Esperi release The EP today and will be onstage around 8.30pm.

An interview with Jeffrey Lewis is up now on the ABoF blog.

If you've any questions about the show (no more emails about tickets though please!) or our PR services, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Esperi - The EP!

Posted Thu, 07 Jul 2011

"Juxtaposing acoustic guitar and a whole host of odd instruments and percussion, Esperi mainman Chris Lee-Marr seems to be making all the right waves."The List

Esperi is velvet voiced Scottish multi-instrumentalist Chris Lee-Marr, and he's back with his new release, The EP. Chris has already established himself as one of the most promising acts to come out of Scotland, having had his gorgeously surreal video for EP track, My Tear Dissolved The View featured on Q Magazine (online) and chosen as their Track Of The Day, as well as having his music played on BBC Radio 1 Scotland and BBC's "The Culture Show".
Esperi will also be supporting New York anti-folk heroes Jeffrey Lewis & The Junkyard at The Lexington on August 2nd.

Esperi's The EP sees Chris taking the opportunity to collate all of his releases from the past 12 months, plus one brand new track, into one collection before moving on to his next big project - his debut album.

Chris’ delicate voice and honest songwriting is akin to Mike Kinsella (Owen, American Football) but with softer, lilting Scottish undertones. Opening track Dialled encapsulates everything that Esperi is about – meandering acoustic tones supported by a backbone of simple drums, strings and Chris’ gorgeous vocals. Dialled feels more like a wonderful, magical journey than a straightforward acoustic song. This is because Esperi is more than simply an acoustic artist but rather someone very special, writing stories that paint musical pictures, creating wonderful images that will touch your very heart and soul.

If you can't see the video to Esperi's ethereal My Tear Dissolved The View below, check it out on YouTube.

You can also download it free from

Free MP3: Esperi - “My Tear Dissolved The View”

Posted Tue, 22 Feb 2011

After the winter masterpiece that was Made For Life, velvet voiced multi-instrumentalist Esperi (aka Chris Lee-Marr) has returned with a track that's set to make your soul ache. The aptly named My Tear Dissolved The View was inspired by the idea that there are some places that hold such beauty they can move you to tears. Written over ten years ago, Chris has created a moving instrumental piece that truly captures his initial inspiration.

The track bears comparison to some of Richard D James' (a.k.a Aphex Twin) lo-fi ventures, as Chris has managed to create a soundscape that truly strikes an emotional resonance with the listener. There are no real vocals, as such, just odd phrases where Chris has dropped his voice into the mix to give the tune a more harmonious body. The rest of the track is composed of keyboards, percussion and some found objects, which have been run through a guitar pedal, further showcasing Chris' talent for DIY recording techniques.

As if the track itself wasn't effective enough, Esperi has also complemented the release with a stripped down video, shot by his wife Cat Lee-Marr and with added animation provided by Graeme Hawkins and Sean Mcilroy. With shots of Chris walking his two dogs on a deserted beach in Northern Ireland amidst ethereal cartoon plants and totems, it's impossible not to be affected by the gorgeous music and scenery washing over you, speaking to a place locked deep inside.

With an album due for release in mid-2011, this track provides the perfect introduction to the world seen through Esperi's eyes.

ABoF: A year in videos!

Posted Wed, 15 Dec 2010
This year, many bands on a smaller budget took the creative bull by the horns, struck out on their own and produced a plethora of brilliant DIY / independent videos. We're very proud of the video content our bands have produced this year, each reflecting the bands' personality and artistic flavour.

We thought we'd round-up some of our roster's best videos and list them for you right here. If you can't see the embedded videos in this newsletter, there are also direct links to the band's YouTube pages.

As always, if you like what you hear and want to know more, please get in touch with us here: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Ex Libras - Underachiever

Underachiever was the second single released from Ex Libras terrific debut album Suite(s). The video was shot and directed by Ex Libras' front man Amit Sharma, at an amateur boxing match featuring his younger brother.

The lights in the background flicker with the steady, fluttering beats whilst the slowed down action of the match itself matches the song's epic intensity.

If you'd like to see more videos by Ex Libras, their YouTube channel is the place to visit. You can watch all their music videos, video diaries, live performances and the fantastic documentary "To Build A Studio".

The first single from Suite(s) - Radar - is available to stream and download below but if you're having problems viewing the Soundcloud waveform you can download it directly from our Soundcloud page.

Radar by abadgeoffriendship

Esperi - Snowman

The track "Snowman" is the b-side of Esperi's (aka Chris Lee-Marr) gorgeous Christmas single Made For Life. The single was released this week (December 6th) via Olive Grove Records and the limited edition physical copies already selling out fast.

The video for "Snowman" is a lovely reflection of the song's intimate beauty and a perfect backdrop to one of winter's most wonderful pleasures - building a snowman in your very own back garden.

Esperi recently released the free MP3 "Dialled". If you can't see the Soundcloud waveform below, you can download it directly from our Soundcloud page.

Mimas - Vader in Burgos

Mimas are our favourite Danish indie oddballs! They released their second album Lifejackets this year on Big Scary Monsters and the NME.com quickly picked up on their greatness featuring them on the website.

"Vader in Burgos" is a track from the aforementioned album and it shows the band in their natural state - running around like loonies in animal costumes!

"La Moustache Formidable" and "Application" are available to download from our Soundcloud page or you can listen to them below.

Mimas - Lifejackets by abadgeoffriendship

Moulettes - Devil of Mine

Moulettes released their self-titled debut album on Balling the Jack at the tail-end of the summer. The track "Devil of Mine" was released as a video and it's like watching a eerily gorgeous fairytale unfold into before your very eyes. The album was well received with great reviews online and in print (The Independent sung them praises).

The track "Talisman" was released as a free download. If you can't see it below, you can download it from our Soundcloud page.

Talisman by abadgeoffriendship

Phantom - Voodoo Romantic

Voodoo Romantic was the free single released from Phantom's debut album Smoke & Mirrors - a debut which gained critical acclaim from the likes of TheQuietus.com and Classic Rock Prog amongst others.

The video is very minimal, and focusses on the darker element of the band and their love of artists such as Man Ray. Directed by Dan Donovan, the it's more of an art piece than a traditional music video.

If you can't see the video below, you can view it on Phantom's YouTube channel.

Voodoo Romantic can be downloaded from our Soundcloud page or you can stream and download it below.

Tango in the Attic - Sketch by Quentin Blake

Everyone's favourite, sunny indie boys, Tango in the Attic, released their last single this year - Sketch by Quentin Blake. It's the second from their debut long player, Bank Place Locomotive Society which reached the number one spot this summer in the Amazon Indie Download Chart.

If you can't see the video below, you can check it out on the band's YouTube channel.

The Unkindness of Ravens - Prototype

The Unkindness of Ravens are a brilliant amalgamation of electro meets rock meets your new future sound of 2011! Nina and Ben have been working hard releasing singles Dead Air and White Road, culminating in the release of their debut EP I Used To Be So Pretty.

The sexy duo are prolific in their DIY video making and their YouTube channel is updated constantly. Below is the video for "Prototype", a free track which was released from the EP. This is Barbarella meets 2011 with an electro clash n' bang!

"Prototype" is available to download from our Soundcloud page or you can stream and download it below.

Union Sound Set - Cause And Resolve

A change of name, a debut album - Start/Stop - and two singles in the bag, yes, Union Sound Set did exceptionally well during the last half of 2010. BBC Radio 1's Fearne Cotton and the 519 Show picked-up on the band, the rock press were singing them praises and the online community rose to show their support as the band also embarked upon a short UK tour to support the album release.

The video for Cause And Resolve is simply majestic. It definitely sets a place for the band amongst the cream of the indie elite. You can also view the band's other videos on their YouTube channel.

What Would Jesus Drive - Your Awful Kids

What Would Jesus Drive are bringing back good old-fashioned pop punk back to music. Their first video for The Girls Are In Charge was a tongue-in-cheek, quirky animated piece, but it's with Your Awful Kids, where we get a sense of where the band may take us in 2011.

What Would Jesus Drive's band's YouTube channel is the best place to grab all their latest video content.

Your Awful Kids is available to download now via our Soundcloud page or you can stream and download it below.

Released today: “Leader of the Starry Skies”  & Esperi’s “Made for Life”!

Posted Mon, 13 Dec 2010
Our last few releases are out today and they couldn't be more different...

Leader of the Starry Skies is a tribute to Cardiacs lead singer, Tim Smith who has been tragically stuck in hospital following a heart attack a few years ago. The album features Cardiacs covers by bands such as Oceansize, Porcupine Tree and Knifeworld.

On the opposite end of the scale, we have Esperi spreading some gorgeous Christmas cheer via his festive single release Made For Life.

If you would like to review any of these releases, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to request a promo. Please note, physical promos are limited.

Leader of the Starry Skies - A tribute to Tim Smith

Leader Of The Starry Skies is a tribute to Tim Smith, lead singer of Cardiacs, who has been tragically stuck in hospital for two years after suffering a heart attack. The 17 tracks on the album aren’t so much covers as they are tributes to one man's beautiful music; music that inspired a generation of underground musicians to pick up an instrument to create something that they wanted to hear rather than settle for what was being played to them on the radio.

Organised by ex-Cardiacs Bic Hayes and Mark Cawthra, Cardiacs' guitarist Kavus Torabi and Spratley's Japs singer Jo Spratley, Leader Of The Starry Skies features contributions from Oceansize, Steven Wilson (of Porcupine Tree) Andy Partridge (of XTC), Max Tundra, Knifeworld, North Sea Radio Orchestra and many more.

All profits from the sale of this album will go directly to Tim Smith.

The Cardiacs' track "Stench of Honey", covered by Knifeworld, from the album is available to stream and download for free HERE.

Esperi - Made For Life

Esperi is velvet voiced Scottish multi-instrumentalist Chris Lee-Marr, and he's back with new single, double a-side Made For Life, just in time for Christmas. Chris has already established himself as one of the most promising acts to come out of Scotland, having been featured on BBC Radio 1 Scotland and BBC's The Culture Show, supporting the likes of Johnny Flynn and Ólöf Arnalds, and being a seasoned regular on the UK festival circuit.

Title track Made For Life showcases Chris' talent for creating layered acoustic melodies, conjuring up images of cold winter afternoons spent curled up beside a fire with a loved one, December sunshine streaming through the window. "Snowman" sees Chris returning to memories of a childhood spent playing in the snow. The innocence conveyed in his voice, beautifully complimented by a backing vocal provided by his wife, Cat Lee-Marr, creates such a swelling rush of emotion that you can almost taste the snowflakes of years gone by as they land on your lips.

You can stream the single HERE.

Made For Life is being released via Olive Grove Records as a double a-Side. There will be 50 beautifully handcrafted Limited Edition CDs made available upon its release, available from today.

An Esperi Christmas treat: Made For Life

Posted Mon, 06 Dec 2010

Esperi is velvet voiced Scottish multi-instrumentalist Chris Lee-Marr, and he's back with new single, double a-side Made For Life, just in time for Christmas. Chris has already established himself as one of the most promising acts to come out of Scotland, having been featured on BBC Radio 1 Scotland and BBC's The Culture Show, supporting the likes of Johnny Flynn and Ólöf Arnalds, and being a seasoned regular on the UK festival circuit.

Title track "Made For Life" showcases Chris' talent for creating layered acoustic melodies, conjuring up images of cold winter afternoons spent curled up beside a fire with a loved one, December sunshine streaming through the window. Chris drew some inspiration from a winter spent with his partner during the renovation of their first home: left with bare floorboards and minimal heating, it's no surprise that the theme of survival through dependency runs through the song. With elements of early Leonard Cohen, "Made For Life" is a song that makes you feel thankful to be alive and in love while the mystery of winter unfolds outside.

This single has been perfectly timed, and will appeal to anyone who's ever spent Christmas bundled under a blanket with a loved one.

You can stream the full single via our Soundcloud page.

Made For Life is being released via Olive Grove Records as a double A-Side. There will be 50 beautifully handcrafted Limited Edition CDs made available upon its release on the 13th December.

Introducing… Esperi!

Posted Mon, 18 Oct 2010

Esperi has recently joined us here at ABoF and as a taster of bigger things to come in 2011, he releases free MP3 Dialled in November. You can download it from the links below or email us for more information - .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

"Juxtaposing acoustic guitar and a whole host of odd instruments and percussion, Esperi mainman Chris Lee-Marr seems to be making all the right waves." – The List

Esperi is Scottish multi-instrumentalist Chris Lee-Marr. His songs and indeed sounds are both thought provoking and incredibly uplifting. Having already supported the likes of KT Tunstall, Gomez, Johnny Flynn, Olaf Arnolds and James Yorkston and being a regular at festivals like Wickerman, and T in the Park, Esperi is ready to take his wonderful music to a larger audience.

His music ranges from acoustic storytelling to colourful electronica looping and combining different sounds with his acoustic guitar. He uses a host of instruments from the conventional to the unusual including his signature rainbow-coloured bells, which he plays with his feet! He writes about his home, his dogs and his family. There are no airs or graces, he just writes about things as they are.

Chris' delicate voice and honest songwriting is akin to Mike Kinsella (Owen, American Football) but with softer, lilting Scottish undertones. However, Esperi is more than simply an acoustic artist but rather someone very special, writing stories that paint musical pictures, creating wonderful images that will touch your very heart and soul.

You can download "Dialled" HERE or HERE.
