"Music fit for Ennio Morricone soundtracks or Tarantino-esque scenarios..." - Artrocker Magazine, May 2009Phantom is Elsie Martins (vocals & guitar) and Jonny Martin (bass & ebow).
Montreal-born, Phantom chanteuse, guitarist and songwriter Elsie Martins was known in her Canadian homeland as a much-loved MusiquePlus music television presenter/journalist. Elsie left a burgeoning television career to relocate to London, UK, where she met Jonny Martin and formed Phantom.
With press accolades referencing Elsie as a female version of Tindersticks' Stuart Staples and Morrissey, nods to Nick Cave, The Velvet Underground, the Shoegaze genre and even mention of Phantom's music fitting a David Lynch film soundtrack, it has been a difficult task to describe the Phantom sound – a unique bitter-sweet weaving of the delicate and the bold; the thunderous and the devastatingly seductive, some have even hailed the band as leaders of "Gloomgaze".
"The aural equivalent of a black cat sneaking across silk sheets..." - Q Magazine, September 2009
Phantom released their debut single Great Pretender via Parallax Sounds on September 28th 2009. The single was produced by James Aparicio, who's worked alongside bands such as XX Teens, These New Puritans and Phantom favourites Nick Cave and Mogwai. Great Pretender is a perfect example of Phantom's mysterious and alluring sound, captivating your imagination, seducing and lulling you into their silky neo-noire musical landscapes.
